Chemistry: The Essential Element

Welcome to the laboratory that is the world in which you live. Experiment with domestic chemicals, environmental materials, foods, and living organisms to discover the chemical nature of substances, their properties, reactions, and their uses in daily life. Design a series of experiments to test your hypotheses about the chemical reactions of substances.

Success by Design

What is it that makes one successful? Is it mindfulness? Being more present in the moment? An ability to learn well from mistakes and to re-design life’s strategies accordingly? Many people consider persistence and passion for long-term goals, or “grit”, as a predictable indicator of future earnings and happiness. Today’s mounting research suggests that one’s ability to work hard, endure struggle, fail, and try again may be the key to determining long-term success and happiness. Come explore different factors that might contribute to your personal future success, and be inspired by examples of real people who designed their own formula for success.

Thinking Inside, Outside, and Beyond the Box

Will you have the next great idea? In 1948, when George de Mestral made a connection between the burrs stuck to his pants and a way to fasten things together (which became Velcro), he was “thinking outside the box”. Here is a class that will help you learn to think beyond the expected! People who make unique parallels and see new solutions will become our most valued problem-solvers of the future. Learn strategies and gain multiple perspectives that will assist you in discovering creative solutions to problems now and in your future.

Legally Speaking

Interested in a career in law, or just want to possess a lawyer’s argumentation skills? Come explore some of the elements that make law such an exciting and rewarding profession and learn how to win debates. Through public speaking exercises and awareness of legal issues, you will develop persuasive argumentation skills crucial to success in future professions, both legal and otherwise. You will practice skills while enacting trials and assuming the role of judge, jury, prosecutor, defender, or witness. Living the courtroom drama will hone your organizational skills, develop speaking and questioning abilities, and deepen your understanding of concepts underlying our justice system. Best of all, you can begin to assess your personal aptitude for a potential law career.

Unlocking the Genetic Code

Gained an understanding of the encryption of our genetic code. It was the unique genetic makeup of the infamous “swine flu” or H1N1 that enabled the virus to traverse animal species and thrive. Gained an understanding of DNA and the processes by which it codes living organisms. Studied the structure of the double helix and investigated ways that scientists reengineered it.

Anticipating Algebra

Gained an introduction to algebra by focusing on its real-world applications. Tackled concepts of linear equations and factoring. Explored games, tessellations, and probability.

Writing the Future

People of almost all historic ages and cultures have attempted to predict the future. Today futurists range from predicting ecological catastrophes to envisioning utopian societies. By imagining, forecasting, and writing about future scenarios for our world, we can create important possibilities and take strategic, problem-solving action. In addition to refining our writing and verbal skills, this course helped develop a future-thinking outlook for succeeding in complex and dynamically evolving circumstances, employing some of the tools that futurists use, such as trend analysis and mind mapping.

Spying: Secrets, Surveillance, and Science

Explored what it would be like to be a spy and monitor the newest satellite technology. Learned some of the gadgets from James Bond films that really do exist today. Discovered how spies keep— and uncover— secrets. Gained an inside look at the science behind spies’ tricks of the trade. Created an original spy gadget and persuaded my peers of its usefulness.
